Sculpture in Morocco grew out of crafts — carved and painted wood, cedar doors, plaster, metalwork and silver — rather than from a tradition of statues, and modern Moroccan sculptors have often worked at that border between craft and art. Malika Agueznay, trained at the Casablanca art school in its years of reform under Farid Belkahia, made reliefs and sculptures from the curving signs that also fill her prints, and the Casablanca School as a whole treated metal, leather and wood as modern materials.
The best-known names today work across the world. Bruno Catalano, born in Khouribga, makes life-size bronze travellers with whole parts of their bodies missing; Mahi Binebine casts masked heads in bronze; Latifa Echakhch, who represented Switzerland at the 2022 Venice Biennale, makes installations from everyday objects. These are Morocco's sculptors and installation artists, most looked-up first. See also Moroccan artists and Moroccan painters.
