About this guide

AfricanArtists.com is an independent guide to the art of Africa — its art forms and traditions, its modern and contemporary artists and movements — and to its music, published in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic. It is not affiliated with any of the artists, estates, galleries, museums or record labels it mentions.

How the articles are written

Every article is written from published sources — museum and biennale records, foundation and gallery biographies, UNESCO documentation, auction results and major press — and the facts in it (names, dates, places, prices, awards) are checked against those sources before publication. Where sources disagree, for example on a birth year, we say so or give the safer form ("c. 1921").

Articles show the date they were published and, when they are meaningfully revised, the date of the revision.

Images

The site does not reproduce photographs of artworks. Modern and contemporary works belong to the artists and their estates, and photographs of historical objects to the museums and photographers who made them. We would rather send you to see them in a museum, a book or the artist's own channels. The geometric bands on each page are our own decoration.

Languages

The guide is written in English and translated into French, Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic. Each edition covers the same articles, and every page links to its versions in the other languages.

Corrections

If you find an error, please tell us through the form on the contact and offers page — a message without an amount is fine. Corrections are made promptly, and significant ones are noted with the revision date.
