Ghanaian sculpture ranges from royal regalia to some of the most original forms in contemporary art. Vincent Kofi and Grace Kwami were among the pioneering modern sculptors of the independence era, teaching at Kumasi. In the Ga communities of the coast, carpenters such as Paa Joe and Ataa Oko have made figurative "fantasy coffins" in the form of fish, lions, cars and aeroplanes, now collected by museums around the world.
El Anatsui, born in Ghana, turned wood and later bottle caps into some of the most celebrated sculpture of our time. Kwame Akoto-Bamfo's Nkyinkyim heads remember the victims of the slave trade, and Serge Attukwei Clottey stitches yellow jerrycans into sculptures and installations. These are Ghana's sculptors, most looked-up first. See also Ghanaian artists and African sculpture.
