Kenyan artists

13 artists

Kenya's art ranges from the beadwork of the Maasai and Samburu and the carved doors of the Swahili coast at Lamu to a lively modern scene in Nairobi. In the twentieth century, many Kenyan artists trained at Makerere in Kampala or abroad, and from the 1990s Nairobi's galleries, artist-run spaces such as the GoDown and Kuona Trust, and popular painters like Joseph Bertiers gave the city its own art world.

Kenya's best-known artists today work across the world: Wangechi Mutu, whose bronzes filled the facade of the Metropolitan Museum, and Magdalene Odundo, whose hand-built vessels are in fifty museums. Photography is especially strong, from Mohamed Amin, whose 1984 pictures of the Ethiopian famine moved the world, to the activist Boniface Mwangi and younger photographers such as Mimi Cherono Ng'ok and Jim Chuchu. These are Kenya's artists with Wikipedia articles, most looked-up first. See also East Africa.
