Zimbabwe's best-known art is carved in stone. The soapstone birds of Great Zimbabwe, the stone city that flourished from about the eleventh to the fifteenth century, are now the national emblem. From the late 1950s a new tradition of stone sculpture grew up around the workshop of the National Gallery in Salisbury, today's Harare, and around communities such as Tengenenge; sculptors such as Henry Munyaradzi, Nicholas Mukomberanwa, Sylvester Mubayi and Joram Mariga won an international following for what came to be called "Shona sculpture".

Zimbabwe also has a strong tradition of painting and contemporary art: Thakor Patel and Helen Lieros, who helped shape the art scene of independent Zimbabwe, and a younger generation including Kudzanai Chiurai and Kudzanai-Violet Hwami, who show around the world. These are the country's artists, most looked-up first. Read Shona sculpture and see Southern Africa.
