Zambian artists
9 artists
Zambia's modern art took shape around independence in 1964. Henry Tayali, a painter and printmaker trained in Uganda and Germany, became the country's leading modernist, painting crowded, expressive scenes of ordinary Zambian life and teaching a generation of artists. Gabriel Ellison designed Zambia's national flag and many of its stamps, and Cynthia Zukas was a central figure of the Lusaka art scene for decades.
Artists such as Agnes Yombwe, who draws on the traditions of Zambian women's initiation and craft, and younger painters such as Mulenga Mulenga have carried Zambian art into the present. This is a short list, and many Zambian artists still have no Wikipedia article; these are the ones that do, most looked-up first. See also Southern Africa.
