Uganda has played an outsized role in modern East African art thanks to one institution: the art school at Makerere University in Kampala, founded in the late 1930s by Margaret Trowell. For decades it trained artists from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, and painters and sculptors such as Theresa Musoke, one of East Africa's pioneering women painters, and Lilian Nabulime, who makes sculpture about HIV/AIDS and women's lives, studied or taught there. Barkcloth, the ancient Buganda textile, remains a material for artists today.

Ugandan-born artists now work across the world: the sculptor Leilah Babirye, whose masks and figures from found materials celebrate queer identity; Zarina Bhimji, born in Mbarara, whose photographs and films about loss and expulsion were nominated for the Turner Prize; and the photographer and actor Ntare Mwine. Kampala-trained photographers such as Sarah Waiswa document contemporary African life. These are Uganda's artists with Wikipedia articles, most looked-up first. See also East Africa.
