Namibian artists

Namibia's best-known artist is John Muafangejo, who trained at the Rorke's Drift art centre in South Africa and made bold black-and-white linocuts of the history, politics and daily life of Namibia, often with handwritten text, before his death in 1987. His prints are in museums around the world.
Under German and then South African rule, painters such as Adolph Jentsch and Dieter Aschenborn painted Namibia's deserts and wildlife. Photography has been especially strong: Helga Kohl photographed the abandoned diamond town of Kolmanskop as the desert filled its houses, and Tony Figueira documented the country around independence in 1990. These are Namibia's artists with Wikipedia articles, most looked-up first. See also South African printmakers and Southern Africa.
