Côte d'Ivoire is famous for the masks and figures of the Baule, Dan, Senufo and Guro peoples, among the most admired in African art. Its modern art has two founding figures: the sculptor Christian Lattier, who made figures from wire and rope wound into supple forms, and Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, who invented an alphabet for the Bété language and spent decades drawing Connaissance du monde, a visionary encyclopedia on small cards. In the 1980s the Vohou-Vohou movement in Abidjan turned to bark, sand and earth as materials.
Today's Ivorian artists include Aboudia, whose raw, graffiti-like paintings began during the 2011 fighting in Abidjan; the photographer Joana Choumali, winner of the Prix Pictet; the sculptor Jems Koko Bi, who carves and burns wood; and Laetitia Ky, who sculpts her own hair into statements on social media. These are Côte d'Ivoire's artists with Wikipedia articles, most looked-up first. See also West Africa.
